My mother was visiting us in New York 15 years ago. We lived a short distance from Hook Mountain, a spectacular cliff towering over the Hudson River, and we loved the views from the peak. She was determined to see it for herself. I helped her up each step of the short but steep trail. She was determined and uncomplaining, as she usually was about most things in life. Finally we reached the top. The world lay at our feet. The river towns and bridges lay below us, and in the distance to the south were the skyscrapers of Manhattan. This past week I have reflected on her life with family and friends and learned new things about her. I began to see her life as a panorama opening up before me like that beautiful vista she and I shared 15 years ago. She touched so many lives and made them better. We already miss her so much, but she is not gone. All of us who knew her carry part of her being in our hearts and memories. The view is beautiful and unforgettable.
